Why offer .AT domain names?

The .AT domain names are the best way to target the multimillion Austrian online market.

Austria is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita. As a result of this, it has a high living standard and if you create and maintain a well-designed website using their official extension, you’ll welcome many thousands of registered users and/or customers.

Needless to say, the majority of Austrian businesses and an increasing number of foreign ones use the .AT ccTLD for their websites. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that a local domain name is easier to remember and more trust-inspiring to Austrian users. Also, whenever a search is performed, local websites get higher search engine ranking positions.

For the past 20 years, the .AT country-code top level domain name extension has been used in countless domain hacks. However, there are very many English-language words which end in ‘at’, so there are many combinations that still haven’t been used. Some of the most popular currently existent .AT combinations include: Arrive.AT, Many. AT and the popular Foursquare service – DontEat.AT.

Therefore, the .AT domain name extension is a great choice regardless of your targeted market. You just need a little creativity and you can register a website name that will be easy-to-remember and stand out.

A quick history of .AT domain names

The .AT country-code top level domain name extension was launched in January 1988. Then the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) assigned this extension to the country. However until 1991, .AT domain names were available for registration only by universities.

Between 1988 and 1997 the sole .AT ccTLD registrar was the University of Vienna. Then, the .AT domain name extension was finally opened for registration by non-local residents and fees were introduced (before that they were available for free), as the .AT began to become more and more popular.

In 1998, Internet Service Providers Austria (ISPA) created NIC.AT which became the new official .AT ccTLD registrar.
NIC.AT introduced a number of changes in the domain name registration process, so that applying for an .AT domain name extension became easier and accessible to everyone.

Since 2007, .AT number-only domain name registrations were allowed.

In 2011, the DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) protocol was deployed at the registry level. Thus, DNS data authenticity was guaranteed.

Since August 2016, the registration of one-character .AT domain name registrations such as A.AT was allowed. Before that, there was the standard three-character minimum length.
