.FI domain names now available for registration

The history of the .FI TLD

The Finnish domain extension was introduced in 1986. Initially, TUT (Tampere University of Technology) managed the .FI namespace. Subsequently, this task was delegated to the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA).

At first, only registered trademark-holding corporations were allowed to run .FI-driven websites, which compelled the average Finn to look at alternative TLD scenarios.

Fortunately, the eligibility rules were loosened up in 2003, permitting any Finland-based firm to register .FI domain names.
