A brief history on the origin of .CH domains

The official country-code top level domain name extension for the country of Switzerland was launched as early as 1987 which is merely two years after the most popular .com domain name extension.

The ‘CH’ abbreviation itself is popular all around the world – it’s the official ISO 3166-2 code for Switzerland and you can even see it on Swiss vehicle plates. It’s short for Switzerland’s Latin name – Confoederatio Helvetica (Helvetic Confederation). This name was believed to be equidistant from the four official languages of Switzerland, namely: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.

Though introduced in 1987, the .CH became available for public registrations in 1995. Ever since more and more .CH domains are registered each year, as you can see from the diagram below. As of currently, there are over 2 million active .CH domain names.

The .CH country-code top level domain name extension can be used for multiple clever domain hacks (a word or a phrase derived from the combination of adjacent levels of a given domain), such as TEA.CH, LUN.CH and others. There are many words in the German and in the English language which end in ‘CH’.

What’s more, the vast majority of currently active .CH domains are in German. This means that there are countless English language combinations which you can still think of and eventually register. Also, the .CH domains currently target visitors from Europe.

The .CH ccTLD is perfect for the Chinese online market as well. The official Chinese ccTLD, .CN already has many millions of registrants, unlike .CH, limiting general availability of new, attractive domain names. As a result, nowadays, .CH is even registered by Chinese businesses. So, if you’re targeting the Chinese online market, now is the perfect time to get your .CH ccTLD.
